Children's dental care
Check-ups and treatment for children and teenagers, with bulk billing for eligible children under the Medicare Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS).
First visits
When to start check-ups
Dental check-ups can start as soon as your child has teeth. Around age 3 is a good time for a first visit, as most children are then happy to sit in the chair and follow simple instructions. If you notice anything you are unsure about, bring your child in at any age.
Clean your child’s teeth each morning and night from the time the first tooth comes through.
At the appointment
What happens at a check-up
Your dentist checks your child’s teeth and gums, looks at how their teeth are coming through, and talks with you about brushing, food and drinks, and any treatment they may need. X-rays are taken only when needed.
If your child is nervous, let our front desk know when you book and we will take things at their pace.
Medicare
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)
The CDBS is an Australian Government program that pays for basic dental services for eligible children. We bulk bill eligible CDBS services.
Who is eligible?
Children aged 0 to 17 who are eligible for Medicare and whose family receives certain Australian Government payments, such as Family Tax Benefit Part A, during the year.
Services Australia usually writes to eligible families. You can also check through your Medicare online account or by calling Medicare.
What does it cover?
Basic dental services, including check-ups, x-rays, cleaning, fissure sealing, fillings, root canal treatment and extractions.
It does not cover orthodontics such as braces, cosmetic treatment, or dental services in hospital.
How much is covered?
Up to $1,158 in benefits per child over two consecutive calendar years. This is the cap for 2026 and 2027; the Australian Government sets it and can change it.
Is there anything to pay?
We bulk bill eligible CDBS services, so there is nothing to pay for them while your child has benefits left under the cap. Before any treatment, we will explain what is covered and the cost of anything that is not.
Check your child’s eligibility and remaining benefits with Services Australia.
